I Have a 100" long X 28" Diameter steel seamless tube with 3/4" wall thickness. It weighs about 1200lbs. I want to make a giant chime but don't want to mess it up by hanging it wrong or drilling it in the wrong spot to hang it by. Can I hang it by chains or will that damppen the vibration. I need to know where to drill it and what is the best way to hang it.

My guess is you will have to study this as a shell and identify the shell modes of vibration. Then find a node in the shell somewhere above the center, and hang it from the nodes. I don't think using a chain will cause a significant loss in this case. Good Luck.
