I have a BS5500 coded pressure vessel (Filter Dryer), and a customer wants to use it in the USA (California). Does the vessel have to be re-coded to the ASME standards and U-stamped, or is there some type of exception?

Here's a link to the California State Division of Occupational Safety's website:
Towards the very bottom, links to various "circular letters" are provided. One of them,PV-2006-04, has the title "Standard for Acceptance of Non-Code Boilers & Pressure Vessels."

It would seem a good place to start. After that, your authorized inspector would probably be a good source.
