can anyone tell why the glass bottles used to store chemcicals and medicines are brown/maroon in colour?

I believe it is to protect photosensitive materials from degrading due to exposure to light. Same goes for beer.
 
butelja's explanation is correct. The brown color filters out a portion of the electromagnetic radiation that can degrade chemicals, polymers, etc.
