Thanks for the info. Looks like the redundancy in the superstructure helped keep entire deck from crashing down on to the freeway, despite the loss of a pier.
 
MichSt - I think if you look at it again, you'll see that teh train is holding the pier up.

Though I do agree the catenary action (girders and slab) is also obvious.

Yup, I agree the train was certainly supporting the cap. But, I guess when I said loss of a pier, I was referring to the loss of superstructure support at the pier.

It’s striking to see those pier columns completely sheared off. That was one heck of a hit.
