Bridge Abutment Expansion

When widening an abutment, to allow for additional lanes to be added to a bridge, are there any special concerns. I am mainly worried about creating a weak plain in the soil where old meets new. Does anyone have advice when it comes to keying the existing abutment in conjunction with geotextiles or earth nails?

Until you have some extremely unusual subsoil conditions there are no concerns with "weak plane", or keying the soil.
