Breakage Energy of Weld 1

Dear Members,

I have the uniaxial stress strain curve of a weld material and need to find the dissipated/breakage energies by pure shear and pure tension of this material. Any pointers?

The work or energy per unit volume is:

w = &[ignore]int[ignore]; &[ignore]sigma[ignore]; d&[ignore]epsilon[ignore];

For the pure tension case, you need to take your stress-strain data and integrate. For the pure shear case, you need to perform a new test to obtain the stress-strain curve for shear, then integrate it.
 
Hi corypad, os there any other way beside carrying out the pure shear test? Say if i assume a simple von mises criteria to the material, can i just relate both energies by a factor of sqrt(3)? I am not too sure about the validity though.

You stated that breakage is your criterion - if so, there is no link between tension and shear. The von Mises criterion is valid for elastic deformation, so it is useless for materials with significant plastic strain, where the majority of energy is derived.
