BOM Quantity Link...

I use tabs in my assembly drawings for the individual part drawings and would like to add a "Quantity Needed" field to each of the part sheet titleblocks. The BOM adds up the quantity needed for each part, but I can't figure out how to get that information to each of the sheets. Is there a way to link the quantities to the sheets with or without a BOM?

Provided you never need to reuse the part in another assy (with different qtys) you can use the workaround listed here;

Those are some great suggestions, but I'm not sure we will be able to incorporate them into our standard procedures. We are creating prototype drawing packages for our sample shop and need something that won't require any work other than a simple link.
It may not be possible, but I've been impressed by the knowledge on this forum and thought I would throw it out there.

This has been requested several times over the last few years, but the only real workaround is the one supplied by handleman in the thread I posted.

Unfortunately, there isn't a "simple link" trick for what you want. The hidden-sketch-line-reference is about as close as you will get.

A part (in many industies) can be re-used in other assemblies, so the "Quantity Needed" is usually controlled by a work order or something similar. It usually does not appear on the machine shop's manufacturing drawing ... other than maybe by a hand written note.

We are working on standardizing our Prototype drawing packages and trying to eliminate the "hand written note". Because these are not entered into the system at this stage, we are trying to put all of the part/assy information on each sheet. Often, multiple shop folks are working on parts of the same assembly and are forced to hand write the quantity of their part on the sheet from the assembly bill of material. In many instances, they write the wrong number. We are just trying to eliminate this dragon.

If I come across another idea, I will post.

Does your company not issue a Work Order (or some kind of time-tracking 'traveller' paperwork) when parts are needed?

Yes, for production items. These are prototypes and the designs have not been finalized. We have a sample shop that fabricates these items.
