Bolted connection moment with 2 bolts in-line

Hi folks,

I have an intuition on how to solve this but I wanted to double check with you.

simple example
actual situation

I'm only interested in solving the moment around Y in the actual situation.
My intuition says to use the plate corner as the pivot point and have tension in the bolt.
However I could see the plate bending and then there's bending in the bolt as well.

What are your thoughts?

The “pivot point” will be in from the edge, but will be close to the edge.

Yes the plate will bend, and is often the governing failure mode for moment baseplate. A flimsy plate will simply yield.
 
The moment arm, Z, is not all the way to the edge since you need some distance for the compression area to equal the tension in the bolts.

The plate needs to be thick enough so that it can transfer the compression as well as the tension into the column. It gets checked as a cantilever. See AISC's Design Guide 1 or any other source about base plate design.

I try to avoid stiffener plates... it's less costly to use a thicker base plate, usually.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?
