The purpose of boiler blowdown is to control the concentration of dissolved salts in the boiler.

The dissolved salts concentrate in the boiler when the boiler water evaporates to steam. The salts do not evaportate with the steam, the salts remain in the boiler water. Without control of the salts, the boiler heat transfer surfaces would eventually scale as the concentration of salts rises to the level of salt precipitation.

any build up of material listed above plus scale and sediment.

to prevent supersaturation of bad salts in the water. These salts will eventually deposit and scale up plus cause chloride damage, so dump it out.
