Dear All,

I am supervising the black top road construction. Here I can say that bitumen coating to chips is fear and good but the adhesion to chips to chips is poor even after rolling. To my knowledge there must be proper compaction with good adhesion between chips. The Contractor is using plant that heats the chips and hot bitumen is poured into it for mixing. The plant requires kerosene/Diesel for burning, thus heating chips. Please suggest what might be the causes for such results and remedial measures. The average temperature of road surface might be 30 degree Celsius. Its urgent.

Best Regards

Sounds as though the coarse aggregate might be contaminated or not fully dry. Further, there could be a particle charge difference between the aggregate and the asphalt cement that causes the aggregate to repel the asphalt cement. Not common but can occur.

Dear Ron,

thanks for the reply. How about adding more bitumen if aggregate is contaminated with dust rather than washing and drying them? I think so because it saves time and insufficient bitumen may result such problems. Please suggest.

best regards

Indiscriminate addition of bitumen probably won't solve the problem and will create others as well.

Dear Ron,

thanks for reply. It helps me.
