Hello,

When a B-product is developed, must it have a UL approval or can it be done prior?

Can it be sold as a custom design with Engineers Stamp?

Who will this affect liability?

Having a UL listing is not requisite for selling any item. It is a different matter that there may not be many takers or no reputable store or distributor will carry that item.

It may also be illegal to install and use items without a listing (from UL or an equivalent test lab) based on the local codes.

As for liability, you always carry the liability associated with a manufacturer. UL or no UL.

Engineering stamps are no test certificates nor are they intended for products, just for design documents and reports. Anything built to an engineer's spec, still needs to be inspected and tested to ensure quality and compliance with specs.

A Beta is a stage in product that in the product development cycle, is used to assess performance in the field and receive customer feedback.

An agreement with a company that purchases a Beta-stage product usually includes a non-disclosure clause and a clause to agree to provide feedback.

Its usually at a stage where all the features are not developed, but the basic product is.

You can stamp a test certificate as a P.E. to say that it has been tested through a certain criteria and the product met the criteria. That may help if the person using the product if nervous about the lack of a UL stamp.

UL would be a cool place to work. I called them when I just graduated from college. The HR guy was nice, but they weren't hiring unfortunately.
