I have a heat stake application where I need to insulate my cartridge heater which I will be heating to 700 degrees F.
The heater will be in a piece of 1018 steel. I would like to insulate the rest of my mounting pieces from the heat.
I have looked at several ceramic materials and also at a high pressure laminate called Phenolic G7. We have used these materials with disappointing results. The ceramic cracked & the Phenolic G7 didn't insulate very well.
My question is, Is there a better material that I can use? I've seen simiar mechanical equipment with a "stone" type of material (it's not ceramic). Unfortunately our vendor will not part with the information of type of material or where they got it from.
Any help would be appreciated.

For steam or high temperature lines or where high efficiency is required I have used calcium silicate. (I think it is an approved insulation for steam lines and some naval applications but can't be sure) This is available in moulded sections for pipes and fittings and can be made to fit sepcial equipment (which is what I had done).

Supplier? I don't recall, I let pruchasing worry about that but I can find out if needed.

Thanks for all of the replies. I am currently checking out the Microtherm material. I also found a company called Accuratus, who makes a material called Macor. Their address is It's a good, machinable material. It has a continuous use temp of 800° C.
