First off, a preemptive thank you for anyone willing to help. I'm trying to find a maintenance-free bearing that will handle axial and thrust loads. I suppose an ideal solution would be a sealed, sheilded tapered roller bearing, but I can't find any. Shaft dia: about 1", low speed, 2000 lb axial load, unknown (but low) thrust load. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I normally assume "axial" and "thrust" to be the same. Which is the "radial" load?

Tapered roller bearings don't ordinarily come with seals or shields. Ball bearings often do.

If the 2000 lb is a radial load, you should have no trouble finding one that will deal with it.

For 2000 lb axial ( := thrust ), you'll need a bigger ball bearing.

Here is one source for both information and bearings. . .

Timken offers sealed tapered roller bearings in a TSL sealed version, other brands too. L44643/l44610 is available sealed and is 1" bore . I think the combined number with seal is l44600LA

SKF (or similar) angular contact ball bearings are another option. They are available with shields. You need to verify load capacity.

I only know of INA making angular contact bearings with shields or seals, but are all metric

If the thrust load (aligned with the shaft) is low compared to the radial (90 degrees to the shaft) load, any suitably-sized ordinary deep-groove ball bearing with seals will do the job.

The phrase "maintenance free" should ideally be accompanied by a description of the environment/application. Also, how much life are you expecting? The replies will be more helpful that way.

Also, I agree with BrianPeterson. Most radial ball bearings can withstand small thrust loads anyway.

Wow....thanks for the quick responses. As clarification: 2000 lbs radial load, with lower thrust load. Environment is on the tarmac at naval air stations, so probably pretty clean environments. Lifetime: not really sure. I'm just trying to select something that would require as little maintenance as possible, while trying to keep the lifetime logistics (replacement) cost down as well. I would be very happy to select a deep-groove ball bearing, but any info on how to estimate allowable thrust loads would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, I could go with angular contact bearings, but I run into the same problem with ratings.

Get a bearing catalog. Study it. All the material you need is in there.

Get a couple of different catalogs; some of the presentations are more easily comprehensible.

These are commonly used in hevy duty caster wheels with a lube fitting.

Thank you to all, esp: BrianPetersen & imcjoek. I think I'm going to go with a double row angular contact ball bearing with double seals. Cheap and (hopefully) effective, and likely easily replaced once the bearing has run through its life cycle.

I guess you were unsuccessful in preempting the help?

I have used DRAC bearings in the past and they worked well, even in dirty environments. Just be sure to get sealed and not shielded.
