Any papers out there on the design of Beams on Elastic Foundations?

Roark has a whole section on it, and I think Timoshenko's Strength of Materials book(s) went into quite a bit of detail on the topic.

BA-
haha, come on man, I guess I was looking for a paper that came highly recommended

New York Times or Wall Street Journal are pretty good.

NY Times is too liberal and I dont make enough $$$ to bother with the WSJ

dhengr,
Just for making that comment, I'm going to model this foundation using FEA software and post a million pages of results for your reading pleasure!

Toad, the concept of a beam on an elastic foundation is pretty straightforward. It is a matter of relating the stiffness of the beam to the foundation modulus. You could do it with a spread sheet from first principles.

I don't know of a highly recommended paper on the subject. Maybe someone has written "Beams on Elastic Foundations for Dummies", but I haven't run across it so far.

I have a BOEF spreadsheet program that I downloaded from the SEAOFSC.org website several years ago. I'm uncertain if I'm allowed to share it, although it's fully functional, and was obviously free to download at the time. The author is not identified in any way within the speadsheet. It references "Formulas for Stess and Strain" - Fifth Edition by Raymond R. Roark and Warren C. Young, McGraw-Hill Book Company (1975), pages 128 to 146.

It's a good spreadsheet, and I've used it on more than a few occasions for tank foundations, etc. If somebody can convince me it's OK, I'll post it.

But what about the gods looking down from above at eng-tips?

we'll buy them a beer (in the pub), and crack jokes (about other gods)

Spats, I suspect you have Tomanovich's spreadsheet..free from SteelTools.org

TJ,

In checking it out, the SEAOFSC download IS exactly the same as the SteelTools download, so you are correct... problem solved, if the reference and spreadsheet work for you!
