Hi, I am trying to model two cuvred circular beam contact each other in plane. I find there are two possible choices in this problem. The first method is to use the common surface based contact method, i.e., define the beam element as beam surface and then let them contact each other. The alternative approach is to use the tube-to-tube contact element. I am confused which method I should use. Any suggestion is very welcome.

The best way to do beam to beam contact is to take the problem into 3D, run in /Explicit, and use general contact.

You have to use /Explicit and 3D, general contact is not available in 2D or in /Standard.

General contact will create an influence radius around the beam elements based upon the beam section property card. I believe you can specify an alternate influnce radius if you need to.

I hope this helps!
