Basic braced wall design

Hello!

I have been asked to design a braced wall which will experience wind loads. How would i go about designing these two members?

I have attached a crude sketch to show what im trying to do.

i completed civil engineering many years ago although never used any of the technical knowledge i had learned as i went straight into a site engineering role, so my skills are extremely rusty!

It's just basic statics, plus a few code issues such as unsupported lengths of the members. What material are you using?

Also, your sketch is only 2D where the real world is 3D. Each member sees a tributary width of load normal to the sketch. The vertical member sees a uniform wind load and the diagonal strut sees tension/compression loads at the pin due to the reaction from the vertical member. Additional horizontal members will need to span between the vertical members.

The material will be steel.


Yes i did not draw them in but there are horizontal members between the verticals. Three of them to be exact and they connect to the base, middle and top of the vertical post.

Find a structural engineer.
 
My civil engineering degree covered structural engineering, although admittedly just the basics of steel, timber, concrete and masonry design. Im confident i can select section sizes and fixing methods, i just cannot remember how to find the reaction and internal forces in a frame system with a udl applied. My work will be checked by a senior engineer.
