Base Plate Grout Hole after Grouting

Are grout holes on base plate required to be sealed after grouting or is this just filled to the top with grout and then levelled flush to top of base plate? Are there any sealing requirements for grout holes? Base plate is located externally. thanks for your answers.

I've not been doing anything to seal the holes. I've not been viewing them as a durability issue and feel that it's unlikely that a patch plate or something like that would be active structurally. All that said, if water made its way through the holes and under the adjacent base plate regions, I could see that being a problem. I suppose one might try to fill the hole with an epoxy of some kind but, even at that, I don't know if that could be made reliably water tight. It might be better to leave the thing free to ventilate.

Every base plate I've ever installed which had a grout hole has had said hole filled with grout and then scraped level with the surface.

In my opinion you don't want to leave the hole under flush - you're creating a perfect spot to hold water at that point. Unless you're in an extreme environment I'd argue that sealing the hole is not necessary; sure, grout will have a little bit of water absorption but if it's level with the plate surface and there's not a weird gusset or something preventing water from sheeting off of the area with the hole, any water is going to drain a couple of orders of magnitude more quickly than it will be absorbed by the 2 in^2 of exposed grout.

With all that said I can't recall ever seeing specific direction on a drawing to treat the holes that way, it is just what seemed most sensible in the field.
