What is a barometric leg pls explain ?
And we got a recommendation to install a barometric leg in chlorine tonner handling line to a reactor where it is reqd to be purged? Why so ?

Barometric leg is a vertical pipe connecting two vessels one at low pressure or vacuum condition (P1) and the other at higher pressure or atmospheric pressure (P2).

In general, the low pressure vessel (V1) is located at higher elevation than the high pressure vessel (V2). To enable the liquid flow from low pressure vessel (V1) to high pressure vessel (V2), this barometric leg is filled with the liquid thus offering some static head (Ps) as well as liquid seal. Height of the barometric leg should be sufficiently high such that the Pressure in low pressure vessel (P1) + Static head (Ps) should be greater than Pressure in high pressure vessel (P2).

Barometric leg (or frequently called vertical tailpipe) is a vertical line inside which draining from lower pressure source to higher pressure receiver occurs, driven by the head of liquid inside the barometric leg.
