Do you guys know of a “standard” detail for the connection of a roof bar joist bearing on a hip ridge steel beam?

In the past, I’ve always had the fabricator build a seat, on the beam, for the joist to sit. The seat is usually comprised of a bent plate to the slope of the joist along the plane of slope, set up, off the hip beam by 4”, and supported by (2) 3/8” plates perpendicular to the hip ridge beam centerline (if that makes any sense).

Have you guys seen a typical detail that fabricators like?

I don't consider myself an expert in this space but I'll not leave a fellow soldier injured on the field of structural engineering battle. At the least, you'll get a fee bump out of this.

I don't know of a method better than yours for this. As I understand it, there are only really two options:

1) Canted seat which is generally deemed to be expensive and, therefore, repugnant and;

2) Make yourself a level bench on which to place a level joist seat.

Other thoughts:

3) Joist support and diaphragm transfer is a little ugly too. If pitches are steep enough, a bent plate may posses enough spanning capability. For flat roofs, maybe angles if they can be buried in the roofing.

4) You pretty much need an 8" wide platform to bring two joists in together at 45 degrees and still get 4" bearing at the joist centerline with a little tolerance. So either a beam with 8" flange width or an 8" bend plate that overhangs the beam flanges.
