Dear all,

I am looking at a problem which involves the contact mechanics of a ball in socket joint. I have been using Hertz theory and Timoshenko to study the contact pressure between the ball and socket joint. However, I also need to study the contact mechanics between the radius on the socket joint and the ball. From FE results, I know that the contact here is more elliptical and the contact stresses are higher. I just wondered if anyone know of any analytical models/theoretical models which can be used to study the contact when the ball contacts the radius of the socket.

Many Thanks

Yes, Hertz solves for positive, infinite, and negative radii for the outer surface, ie ball on ball, ball on plane, and ball in socket, respectively.

Thanks, Greg Lock, but I am not sure that this theory applies on the edge of the socket, where you have a discontinuity in the contact.

I appreciate everyone's input, thanks.

I suggest you read Timoshenko on the subject. What makes you think ball on plane doesn't have discontinuities?

Cheers
