Backflow Preventers in Parallel

I was looking for some help on my proposed water service layout, I attached a sketch.

We were thinking of installing an extra service tap, meter box, and upsizing the line for future expansion. The idea is to add another meter and backflow and tie them together later.

My concern is putting the two 2" backflow preventers in parallel (in the future). Are there any pitfalls to this? Would it better to install one oversized backflow now and make the future tie before the backflow?

Also, are there any concerns over-sizing the line on the building side of the backflow for the interim?

Any thoughts would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am assuming this is for domestic use - not for sprinklers.

I would check with the municipality that has jurisdiction. They may have standards about what you can do.

Unless the building will have multiple tenants - they might not let you have more than one meter pit.

If you are trying to minimize your tap fee by having two 2" instead of a single 3" or 4", they may not let you do it.

I would put in the oversized backflow, but you are not going to be able to make a future connection before the backflow. That would require another backflow in the future. Leave some space to come off after the backflow in the future.

A pair of backflow preventors installed in parallel will allow for annual inspection & maintenance without shutting the building down. The metering can be addressed as a separate issue.
