I need to introduce a back up generator without being too complex, and not using breakers as switches, I fear of back feeding the panel, in what ways are there in isolating the panel and or house?

Scenario:

I live in the Pocono Pa Area.

When power drops out I do not want to hit the main breaker, I would like to switch on or off certain items and resume power to critical areas. I do not want to use breakers as switches. I want to use my installed switches to turn on and off power to specific areas. Is this possible and if so put your thinking caps on and throw me your ideas

Thank you for your time, and consideration.

If this is a home application, a manual transfer switch will work just fine. You can even get a kit at your local Home Depot (at least they've had them before).

Why did you ask the question twice, is this for someone else?

Incidentally, if you don't want to use some of your CB's as switches, you may have to do some rewiring to the loads you'd like to supply stand-by power to, and have a "stand-by" panel of sorts, which would be subfed via the manual transfer switch I mentioned above (the switch is fed via your main house panel and the gen).
