Back To Back Angles,Channels and The Paint Problem? 1

I appreciate these sections for use in trusses and column like elements.

However there is usually a concern that paintwork is a problem since the gap between the backs is limited to the thickness of the connecting plates.

How do you approach this issue. Is painting a consideration in all applications? Or certain applications?

We did not allow use of back-to-back members in the design of electric power stations for the reason you stated. Many of the members are outdoors, are subjected to corrosive conditions, and are typically expected to have a useful life of 30 to 50 years (with routine repainting).

My concern is on whether there are cases where such worries are groundless-I mean I can just go on and use back to back angles without worrying about painting.

What would be wrong in using such profiles in a dry storage warehouse or a roof structure?

IJR - Under favorable conditions, such as inside a building, I agree that back-to-backk members should not be a problem.
