Hi,
We are considering a job which needs some pipework constructed to ASME B31.1.
Normally we make to ASME B31.3 and we inspect ourselves, however for B31.1 can I do the same or must I get an ASME Inspector to review and inspect ?

Do you have a copy of B31.1? The information is all there in Chapter VI, Section 136.

For Boiler External Piping, an AI will be required; however, the contractor is also responsible for assuring compliance. For non-boiler external pipe, the Contractor/installer is responsible for inspections to assur compliance. If you are the Owner, you should assure yourself that the Contractor is doing its job correctly.

Thanks guys,
We are not the owner, we are an equipment designer who engages fabrication companies to make our designs.
We do not design boilers, but equipment that goes in the associated pipework, normally we work to B31.3, so B31.1 is unusual for us.
Have acquired a 2007 copy of B31.1.
As per Figs 100.1.2 our equipment is non boiler external piping and from my reading of 136.2.1 I don't see a need for code stamping, so I think we will have our own inspection plus owner/client inspection.

Exactly. And the Inspector - capital I - will be the owner's inspector. Get his signature on RT's, visuals, and hydros.

Ok, I understand that point only too well !
Thanks
