We provide NDE services to several clients, we have one that quoting a new boiler install , the owner provided a list of welds to be x-rayed which includes 815 socket welds sizes 1/2-1.5" , I have done this is the past to check for pull-back , socket welds are fillet welds ,we usually dye pen. these, we have done several boiler projects and always dye pen'd sockets , I don't have a B 31.1 code handy , does B3.1 require RT on socket welds . we will do whatever the owner wants but if its not required I like to be able to show that and save them some $.

IMHO, RT on socket welds is completely unnecessary.

The code requires the gap to be checked BEFORE welding...not after. So RT to check for gap (or pull back)is a moot point and not required by the code.

If you check B31.1 -2016 edition

MT or PT for socket welds of all sizes and thickness for service above 750 deg F (see Table 136.4)and VT for all other service conditions.

Whereas this is an Owner requirement and not the Code's, ask the Owner what he intends to get from the RT. I have had Owner/Engineer requirements for same to "verify" the gap. You will still need to PT/MT for the sockets as per metengr.
