I can see that API 590 Steel line blanks is now withdrawn from service and replaced by ASME B16.48. I'm about to specify line blanks in a 9Cr piping materials spec. Does anybody have a copy of B16.48 (i've ordered a copy but it's currently out of stock) who can tell me if plate material A387 Gr.9 is listed in the standard and if so is it class 1 or class 2 ?

I pulled down my ASME B16.5 - 2003 and found the following:

Material - C-1/2-Mo-V
Plates - ASTM A387 Grade 91 Class 2
Forgings - ASTM A-182, Grade F91
Castings - ASTM A-217, Grade C12A

Material - C-1/2-Mo
Forgings - ASTM A-182, Grade F9
Castings - ASTM A-217, Grade C12

Table 1 of B16.48 '97 ed. lists the materials covered by the Standard. Your A387 Gr. 9 is not listed.

For plates, your choices are limited to: A515-70, A516-70, A537 Cl-1, A204 Gr. C, A387 Gr. 11 Cl. 2, A387 Gr. 12 Cl. 2, and A240 Grades 304, 316, 321, and 347.

The Foreword of B16.48 states that These line blanks were designed in accordane with the rules of ASME B31.3-1987 edition. Thus, I'd suggest if you need to use A387 Gr. 9 that you use B31.3 304.5.3 for your blanks.

Any body know why 9Cr plate is not listed as a suitable material in B16.48 when in A387 it is listed as having the same mechanical properties as A387 Gr.22 (2 1/4 Cr) which is listed as ok to use ?
