Piping has standards for joint flanges; does the same apply to ducting or are they all custom based on the system? If there are standards will someone please point me in the right direction?

Okay, how is everyong else getting their subject lines to by bold type?

SMACNA has a few publications that show / require accepted flange connections. I would review - Accepted Industry Practice for Industrial Duct Construction, HVAC Duct Construction Standards – Metal and Flexible, Rectangular Industrial Duct Construction Standards and Round Industrial Duct Construction Standards.

DrRTU has pointed you in the right direction

depending on your design criteria you may want to look at ductmate flanges which are becoming increasingly popular

Simple: Don't read the post. Unread posts have bold subject lines, read posts are not bold. As a poster you do not have control over the formatting of the subject line.

Hi whitetop,

Pipe fittings Vendors have standard flanges because they need to be cast or forged, and are designed for specific pressure ratings.

Air ducting is low pressure stuff - measured in mm watergauge. For the most part 6 mm plate is chosen as a minimum for dust extraction because of welding requirements, but air conditioning and ventilation ducts are often made from sheet metal, and the joints are sliding slip-on strips. To give some stiffness, larger ducts have flanges made from stock angle iron (say 500 mm wide and larger).

The need for stock flanges is not so great. Most Fabrication shops have their own preferred standards. Some clients, and consultants, draw up standards for a specific plant.
