I am currently program manager on a project with welding called out to AWS D17.1 and have a couple questions.
Number one, how much difference is there (from a cost/management/time/certification perspective) in Flight Hardware vs. Ground Support Equipment requirements?
Number 2, how difficult is it to certify a robotic welding system to either Flight Hardware or Ground Support? Is it the same procedure as a manual welding system?
Last, nobody seems to know what AWS D17.1 is, will this spec become more accepted and used soon, or is it going to be an odd-ball spec, where everyone still uses AMS-1595?
Thanks for any help.
