Autocad 2007 setup

I have just installed Autocad 2007 and am having a problem with the drawing area. First I am unable to set the drawing area color to black and also I am unable to keep the viewport that I select as default. I use view, 3-d views, plan view, current ucs, which brings me to a 2-d view port all right, with a grid , but it does not default to there, at invoke, it defaults to a 3-d viewport . I have "Autocad Classic" selected at top left.
I would appreciate any help that is offered.
