I would like to know where I can find a copy of the Australian wiring rules, Preferably one that I can download over the internet for free. I am presently in the process of applying for permanent residency. I have had my electrical skill successfully approved, but I am required to pass an exam in the wiring rules(I think) before I can qualify for an electrical licence in Australia. If I can get my hands on a copy then I can start to self teach myself the rules. Any advice recieved will be most welcome.

hi ndevonian
Welcome (we hope)
Standards Australia run a web site and I know they have on-line ordering for members. I imagine they will send the standards to others who profer a credit card. My memory says about $35 Aus. Make sure you get the latest issue of AS (NZ) 3000. (thats the general wiring rules.) I think the latest is AS3000- 2000.
If any one offers you a yellow covered book it could well be superceded, and there have been a few major changes in cable sizing.
If it's not rude what nationality is your current quals. Make sure you document every damn bit of work and study done. The licencing is handled by semi -government authorities and they can be pretty specific about what they are looking for this year.
Are you all ready in contact with the state authority where you intend to live?
If not let me know and I dig up hte contact for you.
If you are already here tell me and I'll get even more specific.

Let us know how you go today and I'll respond to suit
regards
Don

Don,
Thanks for that, I did get sent there by search engines, but I never got as far as enrolling as a member. To be honest I wanted to try and get a free copy being somewhat frugal. Our Wiring regulations are much more expensive but yours sound very reasonable. I am in the UK (a Pom). I expect to take the wiring rules exam as soon as possible after arriving in Australia in the hope of passing without taking a training course. You said about documenting all my qualifications, well I know what you mean. TRA which is Trades Recognition Australia have assessed me for the purpose of applying for a visa wanted everything plus a bit more. They wanted certified copies of all my qualifications and original letters from my employers over the last 7 years stating all my work experience. So I have already been on that road. I havent actually decided which state to move to. Looks like Victoria at the moment. Thanks again for the info,
Neil

hi again
TRA are assessing you for a visa ?????? I thought TRA concentrated only on issuing tradesman's rights certs. (if they do issue that you are home & hosed) Tradesmans rights are the Commonwealth government issued equivalent of normal indentured trades papers.

i hope I'm right on that for you.
Any questions post on this thread or ping me an email that you have postd a new thread.

Regards
Don
