Hi Aussie colleagues.

I'm thinking of doing a couple online courses with Engineering Training Institute Australia (https://www.etia.net.au/). Just wondering if anyone has done anything with them and what was your experience? Was it worth it? My main sticking point is that I don't have time and would have to make it up so I'd like to know if it's worth taking a day or two off to do one of the courses. Thanks :)

I attended the dynamic and high rise wind design workshop some years ago (might have been around 2017). It was very informative. The presenter, Dr Graeme Wood is extremely knowledgeable on the subject.

Are you just after your CPD hours? Or wanting to learn more on a particular subject? If its the latter then going to ETIA is a good starting point but its a course that runs for a day or two, imagine how much information you can retain from that. The one thing thats good with ETIA is having the printed notes, which can be useful.

The $1000 question - are you happy to spend that much? If its a topic that you have zero knowledge on then it might be worth while but if its just a refersher then you might be better off looking at other resources (i.e. linkedin learning).

I did the cold formed steel course (beginner course) a few years back. Having not been involved in the design of the element previously, I thought it was a great course to take.

Having a few more years experience now, the course would likely be a waste of money if you have any particular experience in the course topic. I find like most subjects in which you know about, its more about the 1-2% of information that you might obtain that expands your understanding of the particular matter which can be extremely beneficial depending on how niche you get.

Seconding this recommendation, this one was very in depth, I attended the same course after the 2021 revision to 1170.2. Had tried another course (something generic about concrete design I think) that wasn't particularly informative or useful by comparison

Thanks everyone for the useful info. It sounds like it's worth it and I'll book in for one of the courses.
