What are code requirements for preheating this steel?
Is there an AWS code for wind tower construction, and if not what is used in N. America?

"If you don't have time to do the job right the first time, when are you going to find time to repair it?"

Brimstoner,
AWS D1.1 lists minimum preheat for Pre-Qualified WPS's with ASTM A709 Gr 50
3 to 20 mm inclusive = 0 degrees C (if base metal is less than 0 it shall be preheated to 20 degrees C minimum)
Over 20 mm through 38 mm inclusive = 10 degrees C
Over 38 mm through 65 mm inclusive = 65 degrees C
Over 65 mm = 110 degrees C

Hope that helps,
Regards,
DD

Typically, for wind turbine towers DNV standards are invoked for design and AWS D1.1 is invoked for welding.

Thanks to all, I couldn't locate A709 in D1.1-2008, I'll go back and try again.

Brimstoner - it's neatly tucked away in Table 3.2 as a Category B preheat material, along with grades 36 and 50W.

Aha,
Found it, thanks.
Another victim of sloppy writing - I searched on A709 instead of A 709 as is incorrectly written.
Some intern needs to be docked an hours' pay.
