ASTM A487 4C

I am looking for recommendations on the heat treatment of ASTM A487 4C. The ASTM specification gives 1600F for austenitizing treatment and 1150F for the tempering heat treatment. I have seen normalizing and austenitizing performed on this material, up to 1700F, and tempering up to 1200F. Does anyone have experience with the heat treatment of this material?

The ASTM A 487 material specification is for steel castings suitable for pressure service. If you purchase these castings to this specification, they will be austenitized at a minimum temperature of 1600 deg F followed by air or liquid cooling and tempering at 1100 deg F. A higher tempering temperature will result in lower ultimate tensile and yield strength properties with increased ductility.

So, you will have a normalized (austenitize and air cool) and tempered heat treatment condition for these castings. The liquid medium for cooling would be as agreed upon to facilitate cooling of larger castings.

These castings are weldable and widely used in industry.
