When I try to balloon a assembly in a drawing a "*" appears in the balloon instead of the BOM number, I am not sure why? Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Thanks,

check the properties of the view, if needed check the "linked to BOM" box.

SolidWorks 2006 SP3.1
Intel Xeon 2.8GHz 2GB Ram
NVIDIA Quadro FX3000

The view was linked to the bom.. some balloons in the view worked for some parts. It was just one specific part in which the "*" was displayed.

Sometimes I find that the model/assembly has to be fully resolved. If the drawing loaded lightweight weird things can happen.
Sometimes it can be related to the part being ballooned being a flexible assembly?
Just thoughts,

Try re-ordering the parts in the BOM to Follow assembly order. That has been known to work before.

BTW, what SW/SP version?
