I have two plates; one square, one circular. there are three post that go inbetween them at a triangular pattern. I mated the post with the square plate. When I try to mate the circular plate with the post I can't get the triangular patterns of the plates to line up. Every time I try to align the triangular pattern of the circular plate to the post I get a warning.

I am not sure if I am visualizing this correctly or not – are the posts perpendicular to the blocks or are they angular?

I can also think of a couple things to check. First – are there any other mates on the circular part? Are any of the parts Fixed?

If your posts "traingles" are not identical, you will not be able to line them up with multiple concentric mates. triple-check this.

One possible solution:
1.) decide which of the posts is "key" (i.e. secondary datum), and which is second (tertiary datum)
2.) on the "base" part (your choice) make a datum plan between the axes of the secondary and teriary datum.
3.) Mate the two "key" posts with concentric mate.
4.) Mate the axis of the second post to the plane on the base part.

You can also use Concentric mates on your critical hole-post alignment, then use the part Planes, making them Coincident or Parallel.
