ASME Y14.5 Applicable Manufacturing Types 2

Hello everyone,

I have a simple but critical question. Which of the manufacturing types like fully machined, cast&machined, forged&machined, sheet metal etc. is the standard applicable for part drawings? I read in the forum that it is not for sheet metal drawings.

This is my first post sorry if anything is improper. Thank you in advance.

From y14.5 standard:

The drawing should define a part without specifying
manufacturing methods. Thus, only the diameter
of a hole is given without indicating whether it is to be
drilled, reamed, punched, or made by any other operation.
However, in those instances where manufacturing,
processing, quality assurance, or environmental
information is essential to the definition of engineering
requirements, it shall be specified on the drawing or in a
document referenced on the drawing.


My notes: you COULD use it to define sheet meetal drawings. It is not intended to be specialized for that.
Ex. Y14.8 is the one dealing with castings/ forgings.

Y14.5 is for product definition regardless of manufacturing method.

The standard is for mechanical-type drawings (which could indeed include sheet metal stuff). It is not for wiring diagrams, piping/hydraulic stuff, and other schematic drawings, even though they might also be considered as engineering drawings.
