I've never seen a case where it was desirable to allow a large ugly gap as long as it was consistent, particularly in a consumer product. One huge complaint for car reviews is large gaps between panels.
I don't mean, some example made up by someone looking to justify the additional constraint - I really mean, someone who for the last 4 decades has had to provide a work-around to the lack of this constraint and show what that workaround was.
Much like a logo there's such tight control over the profile for consumer fit that there's no need to add a further constraint on it.
