Is it always necessary to x-ray the nozzle welds. The customer specs don't call out any x-ray but I am wondering if the x-ray isn't a default requirement under Section VIII. The flanges are 300lb long neck SA350 LF2 and the pipe is SA333 Grade 6.
I am also questioning the 2:1 SE head to shell (one course) weld. the shell and head are 1.25" SA516-70N. How many pictures will I need to take?

kenthc,

If the customer specs do not call for radiography, you will need to get clarification from the customer or AI. Section VIII Division 1 UW-11(a)(2) and UCS-57 call for full radiography of all butt welded joints *above* 1.25" for SA-516 Gr 70N (P-1 material). Since this is on the edge, the AI may require full radiography. If so, you would need to take enough shots to examine all butt welded joints.

Second, UW-11(a)(5) calls for all category A and D *butt* welds in vessel sections or heads be radiographed if the design joint efficiency requires. However, it does not require radiography of full penetration category D nozzle welds that are shown in Fig UW-16.1. Since you are using long weld neck flanges, I presume this is the type of joint you will be making.

I hope this has been helpful,
