Building a vessel to ASME Section VIII div 1. Level RT-3. Unit is made of 316 and is 5:8” thick. We will be installing internals that will require the inside circumference weld to be ground flush in some places. Does ASME require any additional RT above the standard spot? Appreciate any help you guys can give!

No. It is up to end user to specify additional NDE prior to welding.

If you did additional RT it wouldn't be RT-3.

This is just very local spot check, we have requested this a lot. Nothing to do with code definitions of RT-1,2,3,4.

RT 100% on welds to be covered plus a leak test (with vacuum box)
Try to avoid a covered retaining pressure welds.

Regards

All spot RT is a local spot check. You would do RT-4 and stamp RT-3?...Sounds like a non-conformance to me.

It would be helpful if the OP clarified what type of internals are being installed that require the welds to be ground flush. Is it something that just slides in, or does it mount to welded internal pads that overlap the circumferential seam?

If it's the former then no additional NDE is required.
