ASME Section VIII Division 1 Appendix 2 gives the design
procedure for flanges using allowable stresses as per
Table 3 for bolting materials in Section II part D. Similarly Section VIII Division 2 Appendix 4 cross refers
to Appendix 3 for Flange Design but with design stress
intensity for bolting materials as per Table 4 of Section II
Part D. Could some one substantiate the circumstances where
the above two different approaches are applied and the
reason behind it.
