In the discussion of UG-34(d) for sketches (j) and (k) the code states that:

"...the net cover plate thickness under the groove or between the groove and the outer edge of the cover plate shall not be less than..."

What is this distance "between the groove and the outer edge"? Is this a radial distance?

Does this section of the code permit the thickness under the groove to be less than the thickness calculated using the equations given in UG-34(c)?

Buck82, 1) Yes I would take this as the radial distance.
2) Yes, per the equations in the paragraph headed "Sketches (j) & (k)".

Regards,

Mike

The net thickness under the groove is the distance from the bottom of the groove to the other face of the cover. Also, the radial distance from the edge of the groove to the OD of the cover shall not be less than the same distance / thickness under the groove. The equation (2) in UG-34 is the minimum plate thickness, with the caveat that the thickness under the groove may be smaller than t, but not less than the formula given in discussion. Conversely, the same figure applies to determina the minimum OD of the cover.
