All,

I am currently trying to qualify a small diameter procedure qualification on SS Tube 0.500" diameter .035" wall. I am confused on the destructive testing needed to fully qualify to section IX. In QW-451.1 it says anything less than 1/16 thickness needs two tension specimens, two face and root bends. Im confused on the root and face bending of small diameter tubing, is this usually done? Can i qualify using RT examination instead of root and face bends? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Christian

Look at Figure QW-462.1(e) in Section IX for a full section tensile test for small diameter pipe. RT examination can be used for welder performance qualification and not procedure qualification.

Figure QW-462.1(e) shows requirements for Tension tests but do you still do root and face bends on that small of diameter pipe?

You can check Fig. QW-462.3(a) --> see note (b)

Yes, we do root and face bends when qualifying orbitally welded tubing, all the way down to 1/4" OD.
