ASME IX QW-202.2(c) and pressure retaining part

According to ASME IX QW-202.2(c) do we had really to qualify fillet weld pressure retaining part with groove weld coupons ?

Yes, I believe this is the intent of QW-202.2 (c). I reviewed this entire paragraph myself and the reason for being able to qualify fillet welds with groove weld coupons is that the skill level in depositing only fillet welds is not the same as for groove welds, which I believe is the reason the subcommittee went this route for qualification.

If you are attempting to qualify fillet welds for non-pressure applications, you can certainly qualify a procedure for just this purpose.

abbver98, bear in mind that a fillet weld test does not verify mechanical properties, only the extent of fusion and soundness of the deposit.

Don't confuse welder qualification (ASME Section IX, Article III) which involves the welder's skills and procedure qualification (ASME Section IX, Article II) that is used to verify mechanical property requirements can be met.

Agreed, this has nothing to do with welder qualification. The rationale for my statement above is that the skill level and subsequent mechanical testing requirements are more rigorous for groove welds in comparison to fillet welds. This is why one can qualify a procedure for fillet welds used in pressure retaining service with a groove weld coupon versus qualifying a procedure for only fillet welds.
