ASME Div2 version

Does anybody knows when we might expect the div2-rules of ASME VIII ed07 add08 included in compress?

I thought the 'old' div2 rules are limited in use until june/july this year?

We are performing final testing on the COMPRESS Division 2 release and I expect this to be released around the time that Code Case 2575 expires.

People may wonder why it has taken so long to incorporate this new Edition of Division 2 into COMPRESS. Some may think it's simply a matter of programming the rules of the Code and why should this new Edition should be different than any previous Edition.

The 2007 Edition of Division 2 was the new Code "rewrite". This Edition was totally rewritten from the previous Editions. New design methodologies were incorporated for external pressure design, nozzle openings, material allowable stresses, and many other design issues. The previous Edition had become less attractive for commercial production of pressure vessels several years ago when the material design factor for Division 1 was reduced from 4.0 to 3.5, which was closer to the factor 3.0 then used by Division 2; thus reducing the advantage for Division 2. The ASME Modernization of Codes and Standards task force was assigned the job of modernizing Division 2 based on new material production methods and QA, modern fabrication practices, new analysis methods, etc, in order to develop the most up-to-date design Code. This process was underway for about 8 years and involved a great deal of effort from many parties.

Codeware has been working on implementing the Division 2 rewrite for several years. It has been a great deal of work due to the fact that this is not simply "painting a new face" on the previous Edition.

To make schedule matters worse, as programming was proceeding we found some significant editorial and technical problems and errors in the Code rewrite. These were passed on to the Code committee to resolve as we ran into them.

An illustration is an issue I encountered this week myself. I was checking the COMPRESS implementation of the new rules for external pressure design of cylinders and heads. It is apparent that the rules for heads have some serious errors in them because they do not provide consistent, realistic results. Anyone can confirm this by checking an example with a given head material and dimensions (OD), and find the MAEP for a range of thicknesses; the inconsistent results will be apparent.

Checking of issues like this is really beyond the scope of what Codeware needs to be doing from a commercial standpoint. But as professional engineers we treat this as part of our normal QA efforts in order to protect our customers and the safety of the public at-large (ASME is foremost a safety code).
