I am looking at getting an ASME B31.3 piping standards book but I am not sure if I should just get the code book or an interpretation book like CASTI guidebook to ASTM B31.3 or Process Piping the complete guide to ASTM B31.3. Or maybe just a simple Piping Calcuations Manual.

Comments.
If it matters I am in the USA

Thanks

Depends on what you want to use it for. I have the CASTI book to 31.3 and it is as you say, an interpretation book writen by one of the code comittee members. Although excellent in basic explanations, it really is complimentary to the Code, not a replacement. It has saved me some time and settled some arguments but you need the Code as well if you are designing anything more complex over very basic facility piping.

The other books may be useful if you are the client or owner and want to verify and/or check a consultant's design, but again I wouldn't view them as a substitute for the real thing.

BTW, I saved 60% over new on the CASTI book by going to Amazon. The book was used but in like new condition.
