Hi All,

Trust you are all keeping safe in this peculiar times.
Please I will like to request for your advise on a technical information I came across while reviewing the piping Material class from a client.
The statement reads "ASME B31.1 for Hull piping (Where there is no interface with Topsides Process/Utility system) and Lloyds Classification society requirements"

Reading through the Code Scope, B31.1 seems to apply to electric power generating, industrial and institutional plants etc.

I will like to ask what could be the rational for applying ASME B31.1 to Marine system piping for an FPSO.
Thanks for your assistance.

Generally it is the owner's responsibility to determine which code applies to their systems. Hull piping isn't process, refrigeration, pipelines, etc, so those codes obviously can be put aside. It does appear to fall within an "industrial" category, so why not.

B31.1 assumes you are dealing with steam and/or hot water. B31.3 is better where there is a wider range for more hazardous chemicals evolved.

First you you to determine what is being transported in "hull piping". It sounds like rather a strange all encompassing thing to me.

B31.1 is mainly a power generation thing and typically seems to produce thicker pipe due to higher FoS and a longer design life ( 40 vs 25).

I don't think there is a lot in it between 31.1 and 31.3, but maybe someone thinks it is cheaper or more applicable?
