I am in the process of designing a lean-to canopy for a client utilizing IBC 2021/ASCE 7-16. The canopy has dimensions 44'-0" x 18'-0" and is to be constructed using timber members. The canopy will be supported on an existing building along one 40'-0" side and columns spaced 10'-0" o.c. along the opposite side.

When looking into ASCE 7-16 it appears as if this structure would be classified as partially open as one 40'-0" side would be completely closed off to wind loads. I am trying to utilize chapter 27 to determine the wind demand on the structure.... but there is no specific section for a partially open building (only enclosed, partially enclosed and open). Where would this structure fall under ASCE 7-16 procedures. I am inclined to utilize the provisions for open structures.

On the other hand, I could use the provisions of 28.3.5 (Horizontal Wind Loads on Open or Partially Enclosed Buildings with Transverse Frames and Pitched Roofs).... but that might be trying to shoe horn this structure into that set of provisions (and I don't think I have ever ventured into Chapter 28 before) .

I'd use the 28.3.5 provisions with monoslope roof and "obstructed flow".

Partially Open would go with provisions applicable to Enclosed. ASCE probably added Partially Open late in the cycle and didn't add it everywhere it should have been. In 7-22 they fixed this oversight.
