Mike:
I believe the article said that the clay tile fire proofing had just been removed from the steel column.

That’s an interesting article, and those jobs are always difficult for all the reasons mentioned. They know nothing about their bldg., we know a little more, but they don’t want to pay for us to gather enough info. to do it right, so we should be able to work miracles, sight unseen. With tongue not in cheek, I’ve suggested that they just get the neighborhood priest or bishop to bless their bldg., that’s what they do. They have a different set of rules and guidelines (commandments?), a different underwriter and insurer than I do.
Given the possible want for good info. on the building’s construction in future years, it has always amazed me how difficult it was to get the new building owner to buy a couple sets of construction documents and as built drawings, for future use, and to keep them safe, and pass them on when they sold the bldg. Maybe BIM will solve this problem if used on every bldg., but then the problem will be that thirty years hence we won’t be able to read those files any longer, or that version of the program won’t be supported any longer. We’ve seen that happen many times already.
