With one "auxiliary" cable failing in August, and a second "primary" cable failing a week ago, there are concerns that the Arecibo radio telescope could be in danger of losing the main suspended antenna assembly. The observatory has been non-operational since August while the engineering investigations proceed.

Looking at the phoo in the other thread, the cable may not have been "broomed" properly before the socket was poured.

The more you know, the more you know you don't know.

Amazing that they were flying a drone that close to the top of one of those towers at the instant that the cables started to fail. They were lucky that the drone wasn't take-out by flying debris.
