I'm looking for the name of a feature on a cut stone wall. It is a horizontal decorative band, located below the roof line, that projects beyond the face of the wall. It may be a foot or so deep and maybe project out a foot. It shows as a horizontal decorative band around the building. Any help appreciated. Thanks

entablature comes to mind, but I think what you're looking for is a piece of that. Possibly a cornice?

Would this be similar to precast or brick banding that you would see in a masonry wall? Something similar to what NCMA 5-2A discusses?

The entablature consists of the architrave, frieze and cornice... what I'm looking for is the term similar to architrave but without supporing columns.

sort of like a band, but projects beyond the face of the wall.

It looks like midline band would describe it... thanks. That's the term I will use.

dik:

The proper term is a string course. I've never herd of nor seen the term midline band before and it's not in any of our architectural dictionaries.

Thanks DB... I've not heard either term before and I've done a lot of masonry restoration. Checked the term on Wiki and it's good. Again, thanks.

In the forensic world, where those architectural details are often problematic, we call them feature bands.

Thanks, Ron... I used to have a *.pdf file with several stonework structures in 3D that had labels on nearly all components... buried somewhere on my computer; I could not locate it. I've not heard of any of the above terms. String course seems to be the one I will use in future, if it ever comes up again... already sent my comments on using the term 'midline band'. Feature band seems more descriptive than technical.

"A dentil is a small block used as a repeating ornament in the bedmould of a cornice. Dentils are found in ancient Greek and Roman architecture, and also in later styles such as Neoclassical, Federal, Georgian Revival, Greek Revival, Renaissance Revival, Second Empire, and Beaux-Arts architecture." Wikipedia

Lookup dentils originally stone now may be terra cotta or wood.

No one is going to know what you are talking about if you use some fancy name they have to look up in Wikipedia. Call it a 'projecting band'. Everybody knows what that means.

Thanks BART... I'm of the old school... if I come across a term I'm unfamiliar with... I try to look it up. If someone is curious about a term, they might do the same.
